About Me

There Is Never an Excuse to ignore High Blood Pressure

I used to thinkt that people in good health just had "healthy genes" and that daily habits didn't affect health very much. Due to that belief, when my doctor diagnosed me with high blood pressure and prescribed a medication to treat it, I didn't take it at first. I soon got a health "wake up call" when I began experiencing chest pains. My wife took me to the ER and, thankfully, they determined I wasn't having a heart attack, like I thought I was. The next day, I began taking my medication and living a healthier lifestyle. Soon, I was able to stop the medication due to my lifestyle changes, but I still monitor my blood pressure at home just to "stay on the safe side." I wanted to share my story to help others and plan to post many more health tips on my new blog.

Using Brain Mapping To Analyze Human Brain Function

The brain is the most complex of all body parts. It is comprised of billions of neurons that send and receive all kinds of messages to and from the entire body that help it function properly. These neurological messages create electrical impulses known as brain waves. A technique called brain mapping is a tool that doctors and scientists can use to better evaluate the brain in order to improve different communications between various areas of the brain.

What Does A Brain Map Do?

A brain map gives neurologists the ability to capture a window of brain activity through the use of digital imaging. This image is then analyzed and provides a visual representation for each lobe of the human brain as well as each specific brain wave that is travelling through it.

The doctor places a specially made cap on the patient's scalp that is attached to a computer. This computer has special software that can retrieve an image of all of the electrical impulses as they are firing off inside the brain. This process is known as an EEG, or electroencephalogram.

Once the process is complete, an image is transmitted that shows the brain wave patterns in a variety of different colors. Each color represents the various brain waves that includes delta, theta, alpha, and beta. Upon analysis, the doctor can better determine if there are any specific problem areas inside the brain.

What Can Brain Mapping Show?

As the physician examines the results of a brain mapping report, they can see each lobe of the brain. These lobes are known as the frontal, parietal, central, temporal, and occipital. Based on the intensity of the brain wave colors, it can be determined if there are too many or too few of a certain brain wave traveling through each specific lobe of the brain.

This can indicate anything from brain damage or potential brain cancer to cognitive or emotional problems. Depending on the ratio of brain waves, the doctor may be able to pinpoint issues of inefficiency within the brain or areas where the cells may not be firing sufficiently in order to maintain a healthy function. This important facet of neuroscience allows doctors to gain a better understanding of each individual patient's brain function and how they can better treat various issues.

Some common issues that may be discovered through brain mapping can include epilepsy, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and even things like severe depression or emotional problems. With the help of these digital images, doctors can better assess the issue and move forward to make strides to help patients coping with brain-related issues.
