There Is Never an Excuse to ignore High Blood Pressure

I used to thinkt that people in good health just had "healthy genes" and that daily habits didn't affect health very much. Due to that belief, when my doctor diagnosed me with high blood pressure and prescribed a medication to treat it, I didn't take it at first. I soon got a health "wake up call" when I began experiencing chest pains. My wife took me to the ER and, thankfully, they determined I wasn't having a heart attack, like I thought I was. The next day, I began taking my medication and living a healthier lifestyle. Soon, I was able to stop the medication due to my lifestyle changes, but I still monitor my blood pressure at home just to "stay on the safe side." I wanted to share my story to help others and plan to post many more health tips on my new blog.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

If you want to keep varicose veins away, keep your weight under control. Excess weight can put extra pressure on your legs, increasing your risk of developing varicose veins. If you are currently overweight, reduce your calorie intake and start exercising four to five times a week. Include more nutritious foods in your diet such as chicken, fish, vegetables, fruit and whole grains.

Exercise Regularly

Exercising will not just keep your weight down; it will also improve circulation in your legs. If there is proper circulation in your legs, it can fight off varicose veins. Try aerobic exercises like jogging, swimming and biking. Try to avoid weight lifting, as it can put a strain on your veins. 

Do Not Sit or Stand for Long Periods of Time

Standing or sitting in the same position too long can hinder blood flow and make you more susceptible to varicose veins. It is a good idea to change your position at least every 30 minutes to improve blood flow.

Elevate Your Legs

Another way you can prevent varicose veins is to keep your legs elevated. Raising your legs regularly can improve circulation. For instance, when you are lying down on the couch, put a couple of pillows under your legs.

Avoid Wearing High Heels

High heels might be stylish, but they can constrict adequate blood flow to your legs. Save the heels for special occasions. If you wear shoes with low heels, you will be less likely to deal with varicose veins.

Wear Compression Stockings

If you have a history of varicose veins in your family, consider wearing compression stockings every day. These stockings apply pressure to your legs and prevent the vein wall from expanding. Compression stockings come in a variety of different colors, so you can find a pair that matches your style.

If you follow these helpful tips, you will be less likely to develop varicose veins. However, if you still get veins, talk to your doctor about different treatment options.
